Mitchell Arts Centre in Hanley are introducing Acting and Drama Classes for adults. They will take place on Tuesday evenings beginning 3rd September up to 8th October.
There are so many acting methodologies that actors can utilise when creating a character for performance. This course gives a flavour of different approaches, which all allow actors to aim to ‘live truthfully within imagined and given circumstances.’ Each week is self-contained based around a particular topic and will use text by different playwrights.
What will I learn about?
The role of the actor and their relationship to the text and their director;
Identifying and perceiving the given circumstances;
Examining techniques and approaches to ‘creating a character’;
Approaches to freeing yourself from the text and connecting to and with one another on the rehearsal room floor.
Practitioners explored will include: Declan Donnellan, Bella Merlin, Michael Chekhov, Nikolai Demidov and others.
Who is it designed for?
Teachers of English and Drama who wish to develop their acting skills;
Actors wishing to up-skill and refresh;
Youth theatre directors and theatre practitioners;
Amateur and Community actors;
Anyone with an interest in the theatre making process!
The course is heavily subsidised and is only £40 for the 6 week course. If you wish to do this course and the Directing course following it, both courses would cost £60 in total saving you £20.
Who is the lead tutor?
Robert Marsden is Associate Professor at Staffordshire University in Acting and Directing and is Artistic Director: Theatre at the MAC. He has worked as a director across the UK and Europe in subsidised and commercial theatre since 1999. His book, Inside the Rehearsal Room will be published by Bloomsbury in 2020.
You will occasionally work with a guest tutor.
